Health: Metabolic Syndrome

The CDC (2017), states that more than 1/3 of America is obese. Why is this so alarming? If 1/3 of us are obese we are at a higher risk factor for many different health concerns and conditions.
Metabolic Syndrome also known as Syndrome X is determined when 3 of the following 5 criteria are met:
1. Waist circumference: > or = 40" in men and > or = 35" in women
2. Blood pressure > or = 130/85
3. Triglycerides > or = 150
4. Fasting Blood Sugar > or = 100
5. HDL (Good Cholesterol) <40 in Men and < 50 in Women
Metabolic Syndrome consists of a group of risk factors that raise your risk for disease such as heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. Due to the rising obesity numbers in America, metabolic syndrome is becoming more common and may actually take smoking's place as the number 1 contributor to heart disease soon!!!
There are other conditions that are being studied that may play a role in the development of metabolic syndrome such as:
Sleep apnea
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
Fatty Liver
Gallstones
Those with the highest risk factors for Metabolic Syndrome include:
Abdominal Obesity
Inactive
Insulin Resistance
Diabetes or Family History of Diabetes
Women with personal history of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
There are often NO symptoms other than being overweight!!!
It is Very Important to:
1. Eat a Healthy, Nutritious, Well-Balanced Diet
2. Stay Active
3. Don't Smoke
4. Avoid High Fat and Sugary Foods and Drinks
5. Get regular check-ups and routine screenings and physicals
6. Aim for a healthy weight
7. Manage Stress
8. Become informed - Don't put off today what may haunt you or your family tomorrow. Your health is important so you can have that peace, health, and time with your loved ones for many more years to come!
